The Nobel Committee awarded the Peace Prize to opposition leader María Corina Machado, highlighting her contribution to the preservation of democratic values and the struggle for freedom in Venezuela. Although they were among the candidates for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, students from Serbia protesting the state's irresponsibility after the tragedy at the Novi Sad train station say that the committee's decision did not surprise them.

This year's winner Nobel Peace Prizes is Maria Korina Machado, leader of the opposition in Venezuela.

Machado was born in 1967 and was a member of the Venezuelan Parliament from 2011 to 2014.

The President of the Award Committee, Jørgen Vatne Fridnes, praised the winner, calling her "a brave and dedicated advocate of peace who keeps alive the flame of democracy in the growing darkness."

The Nobel Committee stated that María Corina Machado showed that the tools of democracy are also the tools of mia.

"It represents hope for a different future, in which the basic rights of citizens are protected and their voices are heard," the explanation stated.

As it is added, Machado was forced to hide the previous year. Despite serious threats to her life, she remained in the country, which is said to be "a choice that has inspired millions of people."

Student of the Faculty of Philosophy: I was secretly hoping that we wouldn't get that recognition

Let us remind you that students from Serbia, who have been on the streets since the end of 2024 seeking justice after the fall of the canopy at the Main Railway Station in Novi Sad, were also candidates for this prestigious award.

They were nominated in January of this year by writer Siniša Kovačević and lawyer Dijana Stojković. The media remind us that the process of selecting laureates is complex and largely hidden from the public.

A student of the Faculty of Philosophy in the blockade tells Danas that he is not at all surprised, and that he secretly hoped that he would not receive that recognition.

"If they had honored us with that award, I'm afraid that only then would we have fallen into the trap of setting ourselves up against Gandhi, to whom we were tied unfairly and not against our will," the student points out.

He believes that this is how they showed that they are a completely new movement and independent of any previous leader or movement.

"I'm only sorry that we didn't receive the monetary award that goes with that recognition, because we would have forwarded that money to the most vulnerable in Serbia and thereby increased our contribution to the fight for social justice," the student pointed out.

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, is euphoric, with his hand outstretched

Overview of the week

Vučić, protector of injustice

Aleksandar Vučić is carrying out an unannounced coup d'état. It's for nothing. He has no defense against the demand for justice. Because how can he look into the eyes of a mother who is on hunger strike, calm the people on the streets and silence the schoolchildren who are shouting on the excursion - "Pump!"
