The ruling junta in Myanmar declared a temporary ceasefire in the civil war on Wednesday (2 April) to facilitate relief efforts afterwards earthquake magnitude 7,7 in which more than 3.000 people died.
The statement of the high military command was published on the state television MRTV, and it states that the truce will last until April 22, and that the goal is to express sympathy for the people affected by the earthquake.
Previously, a unilateral ceasefire was declared by armed resistance groups opposing the military government.
Those groups must refrain from attacking the state or regrouping, otherwise the military will take "necessary" measures, the military said in a statement.
Earlier on Wednesday, rescuers pulled three men alive from the rubble five days after the earthquake. However, teams mostly draw bodies.
The earthquake with the epicenter in Myanmar was felt strongly in Thailand as well, and great material damage was caused. The number of victims rose to 3.003, and more than 4.500 people were injured, MRTV reported. However, the numbers are believed to be much higher.
There was already a humanitarian crisis in Myanmar due to the civil war. More than three million people are internally displaced, and more than 20 million people needed help even before the earthquake, according to the United Nations.
