French President Emanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz and the Prime Ministers of Great Britain and Poland Keir Starmer i Donald Tusk on Saturday (May 10), they issued a joint call to Russia to agree to a complete and unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, guaranteeing at the same time greater support for Kiev.
European leaders and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, who demonstrated unity in Kyiv the day after Victory Day in Moscow, spoke by phone with the US president Donald Trump about the effort to achieve a peace agreement, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, reports Reuters.
The leaders of France, Germany, Poland and Great Britain called on Russia to stop obstructing efforts to secure lasting peace.
"Together with the United States of America, we call on Russia to agree to a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire in order to create space for negotiations on a just and lasting peace," they said in a joint statement.
Earlier in Kyiv, European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky paid tribute to fallen Ukrainian soldiers and laid flowers on Independence Square, during a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Macron previously said that Ukrainians have been resisting with "amazing courage" for more than three years for their country, freedom and for the whole of Europe.
The security of the entire European continent is threatened by that war, and the reaction to it must be collective, Macron said on the X network, emphasizing three key messages - peace, sovereignty and the future.
Macron said that a just and lasting peace must begin with a complete and unconditional ceasefire, which Ukraine accepted as early as March 11, while Russia "delays, sets conditions and continues to invade."
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov assessed that Kiev is not ready for the immediate start of negotiations, and he also said that arms deliveries to Ukraine must stop before an agreement on a temporary truce is reached.
