Romania the central election commission rejected the extreme rightist's candidacy Kalina Đorđescu for the repeated presidential elections to be held in May, which caused clashes between his supporters and the police.
Constitutional Court of Romania he annulled the results the first round of the elections held in November last year, in which Djordescu, who was almost anonymous to the general public, took the most votes to everyone's surprise, since the intelligence service allegedly discovered that Russia was involved in 800 Tik Tok accounts who gave him support.
The Central Electoral Commission rejected his candidacy on Sunday (March 9), stating that he "does not meet the requirements of legality" as he "violated the very obligation to defend democracy", reports the BBC.
Đorđescu called the decision a "direct blow" to democracy. He has 24 hours to appeal to the Supreme Court, which is expected to rule within 72 hours.
In a post on social networks, Djordjeska called the ban "a direct blow to the heart of democracy around the world."
Incidents and tear gas
After the decision of the electoral commission, thousands of supporters of the presidential candidate gathered in front of the premises of the electoral commission in Bucharest. Demonstrators clashed with the police, who fired tear gas.
As the BBC reports, at least one car was overturned, and the windows of the surrounding bars were broken. At least four people were detained.
Most of the protesters later left the scene, but several hundred people remained and continued to clash with the police. Police reinforcements also arrived later.
Đorđescu was previously arrested on February 26 when he was going to submit his candidacy for the summer elections. Hundreds of thousands of his supporters protested then on the streets of Bucharest.
He was accused of attempting to overthrow the constitutional order and membership in a neo-fascist organization. He denied all allegations.
Against the EU and NATO, America's support
Đorđescu, a 62-year-old independent candidate, appeared out of nowhere and won the first round of the presidential election. The results were annulled a few days before the second round of voting took place.
One of the key reasons for his sudden popularity was his promise to "restore Romania's dignity" and end subservience to the international organizations it belongs to, including NATO and the EU.
Before the election results were annulled, the pro-Russian politician told the BBC that he would end all support for Ukraine if elected.
Djordjesku also has the support of part of the Trump administration.
US Vice President JD Vance accused Romania last month of canceling the election based on "flimsy suspicions" by Romanian intelligence and pressure from its neighbors.
Meanwhile, Romania's foreign minister accused Elon Musk of "a form of interference" in the Romanian elections, after the billionaire posted several messages in support of Djordescu.
