Thousands of supporters Islamist Hefazat e Islam group gathered in Dhaka, the capital Bangladesh, in order to protest against the proposal to equalize the rights of women and men.
The leaders of the group stated that the proposals to equalize the rights of both sexes are contrary to Sharia law.
More than 20.000 people gathered outside the university in Dhaka, some carrying banners reading "Say no to Western laws for women".
It was also announced that demonstrations will be organized across the country if the government agrees to equalize the rights of men and women, reports N1.
Mamnul Haq, the leader of the group, demanded that the current government punish those who came up with the proposal.
He said the proposal to give equal rights to men and women "offends the majority of people in Bangladesh".
Haq also called for a ban on the Awami Party, whose leader, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was ousted in violent demonstrations last August.
During those demonstrations, hundreds of people died and Hasina fled to India, where she is to this day.
