French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanen announced that "closure costs will be re-established" which they will have to pay themselves prisoners, with the aim of providing funds for financing investments such as "faster construction of prisons" and "equipment of prison officers".
Darmanen told TF1 television that prisoners "have to contribute" and pay part of the "prison costs", Figaro reported.
He said that this change will also require a change in the law.
According to the French Minister of Justice, the functioning of prisons in that country "cost ten million euros a day, almost four billion euros a year."
Darmanen pointed out that inmates will not be asked to pay the full amount of annual costs, but "a share of the costs".
"We will work together to make the amount symbolic but significant," he said.
