In front Iranian delegations is the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Aragchi. Television broadcast footage of Aragchi getting off the plane of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He is supposed to have "indirect" talks in Italy, with the mediation of Oman, with the American envoy Steve Witkoff.
This is the second meeting at this level since the US withdrawal from the international agreement on Iran nuclear energy in 2018, during the previous term of office of Donald Trump.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has relaunched a policy of "maximum pressure" on Iran, with which the US has not had diplomatic relations since 1980.
In March, Trump called on Iranian authorities to negotiate a new deal and threatened to bomb Iran if diplomacy failed.
