The human rights official at the US State Department, Anelle Shelain, has resigned over Gaza, saying the Biden administration is violating US law by continuing to arm Israel, and covering up evidence the US has seen of Israeli human rights violations, the Guardian reports.
She said she hoped to have an impact on policy by remaining in her post at the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor for the Middle East and participating in discussions about, expressing dissent and concern about the situation in Gaza.
However, as she explained, she could no longer do anything that would affect the delivery of American weapons to Israel.
"The main reason was that I no longer wanted to be associated with this administration." I have a little daughter. She is not yet two years old, but if one day in the future she finds out about this and knows that I was at the State Department, I want to be able to explain to her that I did everything I could."
