There are jokes that young people will never understand, for example, when you say about a computer that it can make everything, including coffee. Those whose first computers didn't have a mouse or a sound card found that witticism hilarious, those whose whole world is in their mobile phone don't understand why the ability to make coffee is emphasized above all and they're waiting to hear the end of the joke.
There are no more jokes about computers and coffee, but there is serious business starting from startups. Robotization and artificial intelligence meet more and more often in the kitchen. So often and so well that the question is now whether kitchen robots will soon be on the list of appliances.
Although there are such projects, robot chefs are still professionals at the moment. They work in restaurants side by side, if you can call it that, with robot waiters, bartenders and hosts or hostesses. They came out of laboratories and garages and are cooking "for the people". For now, they are an excess and an attraction, but that revolution has taken a good bite and is really swallowing.
Forbes magazine predicts that in the near future, four out of five jobs (82%) in the hospitality industry will be performed by machines, i.e. robots. One of those four will be a cook (21%), two will serve guests (51%), and the remaining one will clean, chop, arrange, take orders and do all the other necessary jobs. Unlike some other professions, where the machine offers efficiency, catering is forced to undergo such changes because it is difficult to find quality workforce. Forbes writes that in 2022 there was a shortage of three hundred thousand workers in the hospitality industry in the US alone.
We will notice the first changes in fast food restaurants, which is not unusual. There, the work is highly standardized, the food arrives already semi-prepared, it is not some unattainable wisdom to make a robot that will flip burgers and put them in buns with other accessories (caliexpressbyflippy.com). A bigger step forward is the possibility for robots to cook more advanced dishes, far tastier and slightly more complicated to prepare (@e_vino_spaghetti).
We have one such example in the neighborhood, in Croatia, where the restaurant Bots and Pots (botsandpots.com) was opened two years ago, where robotic devices make serious dishes. Serious in the sense that a top chef was hired for their programming, who designed the menu and cooking stages, while mathematicians defined the functions that will be used by the cooker that stirs what is being cooked so that nothing burns and everything is absolutely perfect. Those who come up with such things claim that the robot chef always makes a dish of the same quality (top quality), it cannot fail. At the same time, he is never tired, he does not go on vacation, he is more efficient than a living chef, he is not harmed by fire or a knife, and if somewhere a kulager gets stuck, he can be replaced by a spare robot.
The essential question is whether a robot chef can move into our house, so that we can enjoy top-quality food every day, not to mention the preparation of fame? Those who hope for that will be happy to hear that the company "Tesla" is already making such a robot, although it is still far from being able to replace a human in the home kitchen, but it is moving in that direction.
Will every house have it like it has a washing machine and dishwasher, microwave and mixer? It will probably go gradually, the first robots will give less than we expect for the cost price, but so it is with the development of artificial intelligence. Over time, we will get to the point where a cooking robot will become a must in the house, capable not only of perfectly preparing eggs (which "Tesla's" robot does) but also of designing a suitable menu for each member of the household, and of buying groceries optimally so that nothing is ever thrown away. It will probably cost as much as the average mid-range car and will be bought in a similar way.
The only doubt is - can it be programmed to iron?
