Jian G, former associate of the MP Alternatives for Germany (AfD) has been for years spied for the Chinese secret service and provided it with hundreds of documents, some of which were sensitive.
In order to gather information, he used his role as Krach's assistant during his previous term as a member of the European Parliament in Brussels from 2019 to 2024. writes Deutsche Welle.
The court in Dresden sentenced him to four years and nine months in prison, the court also found that Jian G. spied on Chinese dissidents, but also collected information on the leadership of the AfD.
What about the alleged accomplice?
Gian denied the charges during the trial. "I did not work for Chinese intelligence and I am innocent," he said at a hearing last week.
His lawyer asked for an acquittal due to insufficient evidence - and the prosecutor for a prison sentence of seven and a half years.
Alleged accomplice Giana G, co-accused Jaki S, was accused of providing data on cargo, flights and passengers as an employee of a logistics company at the airport in Leipzig.
She admitted during the trial that she passed the information, but denied knowing about the agent's activities. The court sentenced her to a suspended sentence of one year and nine months.
A special process for an AfD politician
The Dresden Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating AfD politician Maximilian Krach in a separate case for bribery and money laundering related to Chinese payments.
As a witness at this trial, that member of the Bundestag stated that he had no knowledge of the espionage activities of his former assistant, nor of his membership in the Chinese Communist Party.
