"Stargate" is an initiative of the Trump administration to push the boundaries of US technological development, opening the door to new opportunities in the world of artificial intelligence and innovation. The Chinese would want the same thing with their "Dipsik"
On the second day of his new term, in the historic Roosevelt Room of the White House - located in the heart of the West Wing, opposite the Oval Office itself and named after Presidents Theodore and Franklin Delano Roosevelt - US President Donald Trump hosted leading people from the world of technology. The reason for the gathering was the announcement of the ambitious Stargate Project, a $500 billion initiative aimed at building a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in the United States of America.
On that occasion, Donald Trump signed an executive order requiring the administration to develop an action plan for artificial intelligence within 180 days. The aim of the regulation is to make America the "world capital" in this area, with policies that will preserve and improve its "global dominance", competitiveness and national security.
Next to Trump stood the key players of this technology initiative: Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, Masayoshi Son, director of SoftBank and chairman of the project, and Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle. These three companies, with the support of the state investment fund MGX from the United Arab Emirates and giants such as Microsoft and Nvidia, will form the backbone of the financing and implementation of this significant undertaking. They pointed out in unison the potential of Stargate to bring significant benefits in various fields.
"I think this will be the most important project of this era," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The head of Oracle Corporation, Larry Ellison, particularly emphasized the potential of artificial intelligence in the field of healthcare. "With VI, cancer can be detected with a simple blood test. Once a tumor is genetically sequenced, a personalized vaccine can be made, often within 48 hours," he said, explaining that mRNA vaccines are being created with the help of robots and artificial intelligence. The head of Oracle added that the construction of the first data centers for the Stargate project has already begun in Texas, and new ones are planned at other locations in the USA.
The timing of the launch of Trump's new privately funded tech venture coincides with a thaw in relations with the leaders of the big-tech company, who were present at his inauguration with the paper.
WHO WILL BE THE FIRST?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rightly considered a key technology of the future, which will transform industries, economies and military capabilities of countries. The "war" for supremacy in the development of artificial intelligence between the US and China will represent a key area of technological competition, which may have far-reaching consequences for the global order. Both countries are investing huge resources in research and development of artificial intelligence, competing to attract talent and investment, develop startups and create innovation in this sector.
......
Thus, on January 20, the Chinese chatbot VI "DeepSeek" was released and became a global phenomenon, conquering the top of the list of downloads of free applications and causing a shock in the technology industry. This VI model has attracted attention for its ability to achieve performance similar to the world's leading VI systems, but at a much lower cost thanks to the use of less advanced chips.
Dipsik reported that it took just two months and $5,6 million to develop that model, which is significantly less than the billions that Silicon Valley tech companies are investing in developing VI technology. Microsoft has set aside 80 billion dollars for artificial intelligence in this fiscal year, while Meta allocated 65 billion for the development of AI.
This success shocked investors and caused a drastic drop in the value of the shares of American technology companies, including a loss of as much as 600 billion dollars for the giant Nvidia, which is the biggest one-day loss in the history of the United States. US President Donald Trump considers the sudden success of China's chatbot VI to be a "wake-up call" for US technology companies and stressed the need to improve their global competitiveness.
For both countries, the economic implications are significant because dominance in this area promises to create new jobs, increase productivity and create completely new industries. From a military and defense perspective, AI offers the potential for the development of advanced weapons systems, improved intelligence analysis and autonomous military operations, raising concerns about a possible arms race and cyber warfare. And finally, from a geopolitical point of view, victory in this "war" would ensure global influence, realization of key strategic interests and the possibility of setting technological standards in the decades to come.
GLOBAL DOMINATION
The complexity of global technological competition is additionally reflected in issues of data access, regulatory frameworks, and ethical aspects of artificial intelligence development. China's AI development strategy is strongly influenced by the state. This country, with its huge population and digital economy, generates vast amounts of data through the daily digital activities of its citizens. Also, less stringent privacy regulations compared to the US allow the Chinese government and companies to more easily access and collect that data, often without strict restrictions and the need for explicit user consent.
In contrast, in the US, the main sources of data are private companies like Google, Meta and Amazon, which collect data through their platforms and services. However, these companies operate under stricter privacy regulations, which limit the collection, use and sharing of data without the user's consent. Still, the power of Silicon Valley and America's big tech companies, along with the fact that as many as 42 percent of the world's leading artificial intelligence experts work in the United States, still provides America with a competitive advantage over China.
VOTES AGAINST
However, there are also influential voices who do not believe in the realization of this "star" project. The owner of Tesla, Elon Musk, for example, who will head the newly formed Department of Efficiency of the US government, expressed doubts about the feasibility of this ambitious infrastructure initiative. He believes that financiers simply will not be able to provide the announced 500 billion dollars. "They don't really have money," Musk wrote on his X social network.
US President Donald Trump said that he does not mind that one of his key advisers is questioning the announced agreement on the Stargate project. "He hates one of the people in that deal," he added, probably referring to Sam Altman, director of OpenAI, with whom Musk has been at odds for some time, according to "Business Insider." Elon Musk, by the way, was one of the founders of OpenAI in 2015 together with Altman. He then left the company, began a legal battle with OpenAI, and founded xAI, a competing AI startup.
Despite the optimism of those present at the meeting in the elegant Roosevelt Room of the White House, it remains to be seen to what extent the Stargate project will influence the shaping of the global balance of power in the technological age. Considering the rivalry between the world's two largest economies, the (failure) of this project could have a significant impact on the geopolitical dynamics of the 21st century.
