Twenty years of work, the Section of Historians of the Museum Society of Serbia was marked by the first professional conference on December 11 and 12 in Novi Sad.
Jelena Vukčević, president of the Section, says that this jubilee was the occasion to organize "the first professional conference of historians, curators, senior curators and museum advisors working in the museums of the Republic of Serbia" and to invite colleagues from the Museum Society of Montenegro. More than 40 historians participated.
The theme of the conference was "Museum object - a witness of time", and Jelena Vukčević emphasizes that it is "the first professional conference where material historical sources and ways of their processing and interpretation are presented. Given that the work of historians is mainly related to documentary material, this was a way to show that material sources are also very valuable carriers of data."
Judging by the topics, many participants decided to discover the life of the region where they come from, talking about the objects from their collections. So, for example, people heard about the Rudničko-Takovo area based on postcards, about the memorial fountain to King Aleksandar Karađorđević in Dragosinjci near Kraljevo, about three items that reveal the history of the Iron Bridge across the Western Morava in Trstenik, Kraljevo scrapbooks, about Steria's theater...
Otherwise, apart from the areas that concern the profession, the Section of Historians of the MDS is also trying to improve the place of history as a science and a subject in education and society. It has 40 members, tries to ensure its survival by applying for projects, and the preparation of the jubilee diverted their attention from current, primarily financial, problems.
