Gatherings "Theatre on the Street" and "0,67 percent" for culture

Theaters from Belgrade and Vojvodina walked through Novi Sad today, gathered in the protest "Theatre on the street - the boards fell silent".

At the protest were members of Novi Sad theaters, Terazije Theater, Atelier 212, National Theater in Sombor, National Theater in Belgrade, "Toša Jovanović" Zrenjanin, Belgrade Drama Theater, Yugoslav Drama Theater, "Boška Buha" Theater, "Duško Radović" Small Theater, Šabac Theater...

After a fifteen-minute silence in honor of the victims, they went from the Railway Station to the Rectorate, through the central streets of the city. A large number of citizens joined them there.

Actor of the National Theater in Belgrade, Darko Tomović and president of the "Singlus" trade union, tells "Vreme" that "in front of the Rectorate, the program started with the student anthem, then my colleague Mirjana Gardinovački, the champion of the Serbian National Theater, gave a very strong speech, and at the end, each theater handed over a stage board to the students. We gave them the symbol of the theater, as a sign of support for their commitment to a just society."

Tomovic says that he can't describe how it was, "it was like always being at a gathering that is driven by a noble goal, a goal for the benefit of all of us, where nothing gets in the way of our togetherness and energy."

A rally has been announced for tomorrow, Tuesday, at 18 p.m. in Belgrade, in front of the Ministry of Culture.

"Culture in Blockade", an informal initiative for all cultural workers, calls for a "0,67 percent" protest, alluding to the unacceptably small percentage allocated for culture from the state budget this year.

"We ask that the institutions in this society start doing their job." We stand in front of the one that is responsible for the development of cultural production and the preservation of the cultural heritage of the Republic of Serbia," reads the invitation "Culture in blockade to tomorrow's meeting.
