"We will demolish the old Post Office building and restore its former glory." In that building, you will have a new children's museum and two theater stages," Minister of Finance Siniša Mali announced yesterday, Saturday, on International Museum Day, in Sava Square in Belgrade, in front of journalists.
With that, although he did not say it, he also announced, in addition to the news, that the investor Belgrade na voda did not give up on that building.
Namely, at the beginning of April, this investor announced that he was giving up the request to obtain location conditions for the construction of a new building on the site of the Post Office building on Savski Square, with the renovation of the facade according to the project of architect Momir Korunović. Then he changed his mind, and on May 14 a new request was submitted to the City Secretariat for Urban Planning.
This is the third attempt of Belgrade on the water to obtain the location conditions that are a prerequisite for the preparation of the documentation required for obtaining a construction permit and starting the works.
One of the objections of the City Secretariat in the investor's first request concerned the fate of the Post Office building: it was not clear whether the investor's plan to demolish the existing building and build a new one with a Korunović facade was feasible, or whether it was necessary to keep the existing building and renovate it. The investor was advised to submit the original project by architect Momir Korunović or other evidence in order to establish the authenticity of the original project.
It is not known whether this problem also existed in the second request, as well as whether it exists in the third, most recent one.
The investor previously stated that the original project of the building was most likely destroyed, but that with the help of the grandson of the architect Korunović, they collected drawings and other documentation that allows them to reconstruct the original facade.
Judging by Sinisa Mali's statement yesterday, "we will demolish the old Post Office building and restore its old glory", everything has been resolved: the investor's idea to demolish the building is achievable, and the problem of not having an original project has been resolved. However, it is not clear how Sinisa Mali can know this. given that the City Secretariat for Urban Planning has until the end of May to respond to the investor's request.
