As part of the Capital of Culture project of Serbia, a hall was opened in Šećeranski Park in Zrenjanin with money intended for the decoration of parks, not for culture, for which this country has no money.
Less than a month since the beginning Zrenjanin capital of culture, the mayor of this city, Simo Salapura, on April 17 canceled the tenders for the co-financing of the programs planned by this project. The reason: there are no funds earmarked for those purposes in the city budget.
The city and the Capital of Culture team claimed that it was just a matter of changing the program, and that Zrenjanin is still the Capital of Culture. However, apart from ongoing and previously announced programs, nothing happened in Zrenjanin.
One of the most significant for the City
And then on Tuesday, in Šećeranski Park, the first cultural infrastructure object within the Zrenjanin Capital of Culture of Serbia 2025 project was opened - saletla, park pavilion.
Assistant mayor Snežana Vučurević said at the opening that "this project is one of the most important projects in the field of culture for the city of Zrenjanin".
"The restoration of Šećeranski Park and the construction of this hall represents a new cultural space, a new open stage for numerous cultural events," she added.
Darko Polić, manager of the "Zrenjanin - Capital of Culture 2025" project. he explained that "saletla was chosen because the city already had one line of funding for the restoration of horticulture, which was done with funds from another source of the Republic of Serbia", but also because of "the desire to decentralize cultural places and spaces, because the people who live around Šećeranski Park, and we also have a swimming pool nearby, deserve to have a small stage where they will feel that culture has come to our region, that we can be there every day, we have a stage, where we can be inspired and that precisely because of this space, we create some of our own performances".
Enumerating some more park areas and parts of the city that will be renovated, he mentioned that "the Pedestrian Bridge could become another new cultural space" and specified "but we are saving that more for the second half of the year when the financing of this project will be established".
Whose project is the Capital of Culture
In the end, it was said that "thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, the City of Zrenjanin and European funds, the city is getting spaces designed to enhance the scenery of everyday life, to beautify the landscape of the city and make art more present in the lives of its residents."
As a reminder, the Capital of Culture project is a project of the Ministry of Culture. It is financed by the Ministry of Culture and the local community. In this project, there is no city funding line for horticulture renewal.
Zrenjanin honestly admitted that he does not have the 30 million dinars planned for the tender for co-financing projects. The Ministry of Culture has not made a statement, and information on whether it has fulfilled its part of the obligation is a secret.
Saletla in Šećeranski Park is the result of the City's resourcefulness and the decision to transfer the money intended for park improvement to the Capital of Culture. It should be expected that the Minister of Culture, Nikola Selaković, will soon boast that, thanks to the project of the Ministry of Culture and the Government of Serbia, Zrenjanin got a new space for cultural events.
Explanation board
As you can see, the sign on which it is pointed out why the saletla was erected in Šećeranski Park is multilingual. The text in Hungarian was written incorrectly, and it seems that there was no space for the text in Romanian, the other official language of the province.
