The Museum of the City of Belgrade and the History Museum of Serbia are expecting their first visitors in their new premises sometime before the start of the Expo. The Minister of Finance, Siniša Mali, also announced a museum district near Belgrade on the water, as if the one on Republic Square and Student Square did not already exist.
Two museums in Belgrade expect Expo 2027 to solve their decade-long problems. Namely, both the Museum of the City of Belgrade and the Historical Museum of Serbia expect to finally receive the first visitors in the new premises in three years.
City Museum
At the beginning of October last year, construction work began on the reconstruction of the building in Resavska Street, the new area of the Museum of the City of Belgrade, and is expected to be completed in the second half of next year.
In parallel, a permanent exhibition is being prepared that will show the exhibits in a chronological sequence of 8000 years. The specificity of the City Museum is the extremely valuable national collection of paintings, so it is already known that the accent of the permanent exhibition will be on it and, of course, on archaeological artifacts such as the skeleton of a mammoth.
For the last three years, a lot of work has been done on the conservation and restoration of hundreds of thousands of objects stored in depots.
History Museum
The tender for the reconstruction of the old railway station building, which will house the Historical Museum, was opened on July 12 and lasts until August 16, and the relocation is expected to be completed in 2027.
Of the 6000 square meters, about 3000 will be museum exhibits only. Due to the age of the building and the way it was built 140 years ago, it is estimated that the adaptation and decoration of the building will take three years.
It is expected to cost around two billion dinars.
The intention is to arrange the plateau behind the building, where the platforms were, so that the locomotive placed there would tell the story of the First and Second World Wars.
The historical museum has more than 45.000 very valuable objects. It is planned that the permanent exhibition will include the period from Ancient Rome to the Neolithic in one part, the period up to the 19th century in the other, and artifacts from the 20th century will be exhibited on the first floor. In the new location, there will be the Kraljev and Titov salons, which are intended for thematic settings, while a multifunctional hall will be built in the part of the building where the platform passage used to be, which will be used for organizing various thematic settings, promotions and other activities.
Museum quarter
According to the announcement of the Minister of Finance Sinisa Malog, the History Museum will be part of the "museum quarter".
As Mali announced on May 18, on International Museum Day, the History Museum of Serbia, the Children's Museum, the Museum of the City of Belgrade and the Nikola Tesla Museum will form Belgrade's "museum district" on the water.
However, Belgrade has always had a museum district. It is around Republic Square and Student Square where the National Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, the Museum of the Wolf and Dositei, the Pedagogical Museum, and the Museum of Theater Arts are located.
A little further from them, at the top of Resavska, there will be the Museum of the City of Belgrade, and by 2027, Mali announced, the Aviation Museum will be ready.
In total, because of Expo in Belgrade, six museums will be reconstructed or built, and as Minister Mali said, their core will be around Belgrade on the water. .
