It seems that in pop culture, every generation must have its own victims of air crashes that could have been avoided. The latest in a line of heroes to fall to earth is Oliver Tree Nickel, American alternative pop star. But his helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has elements of rare bizarreness, exactly as his career has been.
The signee had the opportunity to spend some strange and beautiful moments with Oliver twice - the first time when Oliver sold out the "Amerikana" hall of the Belgrade Youth Center in the fall of 2022, the second time when he performed with standing ovations on the Main Stage of Exit 2024. Both times something unusual happened, which we were all aware of - there was an aura around Oliver, a kind of magnetism that drew people into his wacky world.
Oliver Tree's satirical universe was an extension of the devastating TV humor of "Beavis & Butthead" and "South Park" through musical means. Live, he broke all the pop clichés. Here's an example: he declared the performance in Belgrade over after only two tracks and then announced that everything else was an encore (the show lasted a normal hour and a half after all). The band members performed in jerseys that resembled the jerseys of the Soviet Union hockey team. During the concert, he staged an argument on stage and then a fight with his group. The show ended with the actual knocking out of half of Oliver's teeth, after he was hit by a stage prop thrown from the audience. The border between reality and performance did not exist for him. That's how he loved it.
Born in 1993 in Santa Cruz, California – a small coastal town now known for tourism – Oliver came from a family of traveling circus performers. He was surrounded by instruments from an early age and quickly showed musical talent and prodigy potential - he reportedly composed his first album at the age of six. However, as he himself said later, due to the death of a close relative, he moved away from his family and school, and went astray, on the verge of petty crime and homelessness. Fortunately, he broke away in time and devoted himself to studying music production and recording, which provided him with a serious craft that he later used abundantly in advancing his career. do it yourself means. He often worked with a minimal budget, but always managed to achieve maximum effect.
His main creation was a pop personality named Oliver Tree. Life was his show-program, regardless of whether it was non-stop appearances on social networks, in music videos or at concerts. In later interviews, he always mentioned how the teenage experience of being ostracized from society inspired the creation of an antisocial "turbo" character who seemed to have stepped out of a cartoon, and that he "consciously uses oversized visual aesthetics as a shield, because he is personally vulnerable." He deliberately chose to be a lark who perfectly understood pop culture.
He signed his first major deal with Atlantic Records in 2017, after his track “When I'm Down” went viral on the internet. The debut album of the program title "Ugly Is Beautiful" was released in July 2020, recording several hits ("Alien Boy", "Hurt", "Miracle Man" and "Let Me Down"). Although grounded in hip-hop and electronica, Oliver Tree showed even then that his roots were in an alternative-cultural worldview - all stereotypes were his target, and he simply did not recognize genres: in his aesthetics, everything could be combined with everything. In this way, with a refreshing dose of anarchic genius and unbridled unpredictability, he uncompromisingly demolished the backdrops of pop culture and mocked social mimicry of all kinds. Because of this, he was immediately seen as a favorite of children of generation Z and younger, who were already fed up with the calculator world of adults, and found their own heroes on social networks. This is exactly how Oliver Tree became global underground star.
The singles "Life Goes On" (2021) and "Miss You" (2022) made him world famous. Albums followed Cowboy Tears (2022) Alone in a Crowd (2023) and finally Love You Madly, Hate You Badly (2026), each as a new episode in the Oliver series. Belgrade visually perfectly fit his hyperthrash style, so during his career he shot as many as three music videos in that city, and he knew that he deliberately recorded them in other unusual locations around the world. Oliver Tree often seemed to be omnipresent, as if alive Instagram story.
That's why, promoting the new album, he embarked on his most ambitious tour to date, during which he was scheduled to visit all seven continents and play in 70 cities in 30 countries - he would appear from the screen in everyone's neighborhood. Probably, his youthful love for extreme sports contributed to the feeling that he was indestructible, and in the videos he often fell from a great height and remained unharmed. Unfortunately, on June 14 in Rio de Janeiro, it turned out that performance and life are not one and the same. In a collision between two helicopters, caused by human error, he was killed in spectacular fashion along with five other people: the aircraft crashed into the parking lot of an electric car dealer and exploded, causing a terrible fire.
Immediately after this event, rumors began to circulate that Oliver Tree had faked his own death - it seemed plausible at first - but an autopsy of the burnt remains unfortunately showed that, this time, it was all for real. He will be buried in his hometown on July 25 with live stream, and his last wish was not to leave any of his income to his family, but to leave behind a fund to help young talents.
Those who met him are aware that Oliver Tree was a sweet and contagiously positive person, unassuming and direct, with behavior that was somewhat unexpected, but never malicious. Moreover, it was clear that we have before us an overly sensitive man who finds some kind of successful compensation for his shortcomings in the constant dramatization of existence. He could make everyone laugh, laughing mostly at himself. And that's why his untimely passing is so damn sad.
Perhaps we owe something to the man who, due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, left his tooth in Belgrade.
