The festival in Cannes has started, but there is less talk about films and more about the new dress code, Trump's customs, and the protest against the genocide in Gaza.
The 13th Cannes Film Festival began tonight, May XNUMX, with the screening of the film "Leave One Day" by French director Amélie Bonin. It is her first film and it is Kanu's first time to start with a debut film.
Amelie Bonin's film is among the 22 chosen by the selector Thierry Fremaux and his team out of a record 2909.
Among them, as always, there are big and important names and films that are expected to go down in history, and yet, one has the impression that this year's Cannes is more talked about and written about topics that have nothing or at least not a direct connection with the film.
Condemned silence on Gaza
Just before the opening of the Festival in Cannes, more than 380 artists signed a text published in the newspaper "Liberation" condemning "the silence of the world of culture in the face of the genocide that is happening in Gaza". Among the signatories are director Pedro Almodovar, actress Susan Sarandon, actor Richard Gere, double winner of the Palme d'Or Swedish filmmaker Ruben Estlund, Canadian director David Cronenberg, Spanish actor Javier Bardem...
In that text, they paid tribute to the Palestinian photojournalist Fatima Hassoun, who was killed in the Israeli bombing in mid-April, and who is the heroine of the documentary film that will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
At the beginning of the month, Donald Trump announced that he wants to make Hollywood great again, so he introduced 100 percent tariffs on foreign films, and penalizing American studios that go abroad to film. What this is actually about is not the most clear, but everyone is worried. Some of those filmed outside the US will be shown at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
Red carpet etiquette
The most widespread topic, however, is the outfit on the red carpet due to the new dress code.
Festival Jury
"Nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in other areas where the festival is held. The team for welcoming guests will be obliged to deny access to the red carpet to anyone who does not respect these rules," said the organizers.
They explained that in previous years, numerous stars attracted attention with challenging fashion combinations that, in the opinion of many, were "too" revealing. Such outfits often distracted attention from what the festival is for - the films.
Classic little black dresses, cocktail dresses, elegant tops are also allowed, and guests can decide whether to wear heels or not.
This year's honorary Palme d'Or will be presented to American actor Robert De Niro for his overall acting and creative work.

Interview: Aleksandar Rakezić Zograf and Stevan Vuković
Zograf's themes, says Vuković, are phenomena, people and objects suppressed from the mainstream of history and culture, with which his autographed avatar introduces us. Thus, on the pages of his comics, one finds the characters of anonymous witnesses of wars, aboriginal artists, local personalities, poison grandmothers who believe that their dreams have determined their fate, characters who, in fact, are a very good match for the superheroes of the industrialized comic business.
