European archaeologists canceled the annual conference in Belgrade

One of the biggest archaeological events in Europe, the Annual Conference of the European Association of Archaeologists, planned to take place this September in Belgrade, has just been cancelled.

In the announcement of the European Association of Archaeologists (EEA), two reasons were mentioned: insecurity in the country, but also the following:

"Recent events, including the government's response to peaceful protests, have led to jeopardizing university autonomy, as well as increasing pressure on students and teachers. EAA emphasizes its support for democratic initiatives in Serbia, but acknowledges that the current situation makes safe and reliable event planning impossible."

The organizing committee of the Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) has decided that the upcoming conference, planned for 2025, will be held exclusively via an online platform. The decision was made due to the uncertainty caused by the current political events in Serbia.

According to the original plan, about a thousand archaeologists from all over Europe were supposed to come to Belgrade and Serbia from September 3 to 6.

This event, the 31st in a row, would be significant not only at the international level, but would also serve as a mark of the Year of Archeology in Serbia, which celebrates 160 years since the beginning of the first archaeological excavations in the country, which began at Rudnik.

"This decision in no way diminishes the EAA's support and appreciation for Serbian archeology and our Serbian colleagues. The Belgrade Organizing Committee and the EAA Executive Committee remain committed to the common goal of a successful and productive Belgrade Annual Meeting. We share your disappointment and are working on establishing alternative arrangements that we will announce in due course," the official statement reads.
