Yes Viktor Orban a great friend of the President of Serbia, but he is an even greater partner Donald Trump. There is also a photo where supporters of the former American president wear a T-shirt with his image and the image of the Hungarian Prime Minister. Can that be Aleksandar Vučić endure? Is he a lesser populist, demagogue, hater of liberal democracy, manufacturer of fake news and saboteur of the rule of law than these two? Of course not, every citizen of Serbia will say. But when will Trump finally figure it out?
Vučić thought about this for a long time and finally came up with a plan. Just as he has a brother, so Trump has a son-in-law. You know: to talk to Andrej Vučić it's the same as with the president of Serbia himself, exchanging ideas with Paul Kushner is just as valid as with the candidate for returning to the White House. There is no better connection than a personal and family one, right?
However, Vučić is not the only autocrat who stands up to Trump in an election year. Will this one believe him? The President of Serbia also meant this: he will give Trump and his son-in-law a gift that no one has ever given them. Here is Kushner's land and buildings General Staff, the famous building of Nikola Dobrović under the protection of the law, so let him demolish it, build towers and mansions, open a hotel, a casino, whatever comes to his mind. And why not? The General Staff is the people's staff anyway, by no means Vučić's.
And that's not all. Architects, SANA, citizens stood up against Vučić's gift... Many of them point out that, to put it mildly, it is inappropriate to present a building demolished by NATO in 1999 to an American family with a dubious reputation. However, the president of Serbia does not care. There is nothing that he will not run over and suffer for one smile or praise from Trump. Let's say - that the current Republican candidate at a rally in Iowa says that he has a super character in the Balkans, he didn't quite remember the name of his country, but his American brother kisses him.
In any case, this is exactly how Vučić sees the building of strategic friendship with America. From his perspective, he is not wrong - he and Trump have the same attitude towards democracy, human rights, truth, media, privatization of the state and, especially, the role of the family and its businesses in high politics. Somehow it comes naturally that they connect more tightly, improve their relationships and values, compare experiences... Both can sign the replica of Krleža's hero Ignac Glembaj: "I am full of mistrust towards the press, towards the public and towards the court from my experiences."
But what if Joe Biden wins the American elections in November? Well, nothing. Kushner and Trump will make a lot of money from the donated General Staff, and the donor's team will not be left empty-handed either. In return, the citizens will hear about another magnificent victory of Serbia and its president while winding the cables for the church or pushing in lines in the hospital corridors. That's how we got it.
