What are they for? caning people and tear gas in front of the Novi Sad DIF? So that a shameless dean would enter the "job"? Bloody heads just for that? Difficult.
It is a demonstrative exercise that cannot be undertaken without approval from the very top.
And the very top, that is, the president Aleksandar Vučić, how much this Monday he repeated the ominous announcement that the state will "choose a moment" to respond to "thuggery" - that's what he called the blockades.
The other day he said that they are trying to avoid force, but that it will be used in some places - supposedly as much as necessary.
Unnecessary intervention
Pictures from Novi Sad show that Vučić lied again. Bare-handed students and citizens were brutally attacked.
While some armored officers looked to push and avoid being hit, others thrashed around in a berserker frenzy, sending several people to the hospital.
The regime will hide behind formalities, namely that the police are supposedly allowed to enter a faculty upon the invitation of the dean.
But that dean - apart from the discomfort he caused when he turned his back on his students - was not in any danger. The intervention of the police was not only unnecessarily brutal, but unnecessary in general.
An outlet for fantasy
True, the regime calculates differently what is "necessary" and what is "unnecessary". Now it is clearly estimated that it is "necessary" for the loyalists among the policemen to relax a little, to see how the people react.
Maybe for the president to vent his revenge fantasies that he talked about publicly on the Informer, that prison mental hospital with surveillance cameras.
Vučić no longer lives in his Ćaciland, but in a country where the people do not want him. In which people are on the side of the students. He can't forgive anyone for that.
But just as there is no time machine to undo the fall of the canopy or put fear back into the bones of people who have been freed from fear, so no magic can bring back the spilled blood now.
Another red line has been crossed. We don't need more proof that the regime not only dreams of revenge, but implements it wherever it can.
And that it will be even worse if the people do not raise their guard, to engage in total self-defense.
