While Vojislav Seselj languished in the Hague prison, led by a part of the radicals Tomislav Nikolić in October 2008, he stabbed the godfather and leader of the Serbian Radical Party in the back and founded the Serbian Progressive Party. Overnight, they renounced Greater Serbia, the Karlobag-Ogulin-Karlovac-Virovitica border pact, the call for a trial for war crimes against Blair and Schröder, Radovan Karadžić i Milan Martić, the clanking of guns and daggers...
Just as Gregor Samsa in Kafka's "Transformation" woke up one morning transformed into a huge bug, so chauvinists and warmongers, Russophiles and haters of everything that comes from the West, transformed overnight into peacemakers and pro-European pilgrims.
The metamorphosis was so sudden, that the chroniclers of the Serbian revolution wondered suspiciously how it was possible for adults to change all their worldviews by 180 degrees with such ease and evasiveness, to renounce everything they swore by crossing themselves with three fingers.
Scheme for seizing power
Invited to give an answer to that question immediately after the establishment of SNS, its creator and first president, Tomislav Nikolić, gave an inexperienced and honest answer. They saw, he admitted, that the radical and pro-Greater Serbs can win many voters and be a strong and very unpleasant opposition party, but with an anti-European narrative they can't get to power. That's why they turned the tables and declared themselves pro-Europeans, whose goal is no longer the return of lost Serbian territories in Croatia and similar cosmic nonsense, but Serbia's membership in the European Union.
The account opened. In May 2012, on the wave of transitional discontent, Tomislav Nikolić made up for the advantage that Boris Tadić had in the second round of the presidential elections and became the president of Serbia with 70.111 more votes.
The progressive era began, followed by the coronation of Ace Serb.
Return to Seselj's settings
Thirteen years later, what was born on a lie, was twisted in lies. If it was not clear to anyone until now, there is no longer any dilemma: SNS is not a pro-European party, but an interest organization, Serbia led by Aleksandar Vučić is consistently moving away from the European Union all the time. Anything that strengthens the position of the SNS moves Serbia away from the Union, and conversely, anything that brings the country closer to the EU weakens the progressive regime. The progressives' declaration of EU membership as a strategic goal has become comical.
By defending lawlessness, Vučić and his brothers are defending themselves. By collapsing the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime, they are destroying the last line of defense of the rule of law. Radicals returned to their Seselian settings.
After 35 years of futile vicissitudes, the citizens of Serbia will once again, perhaps as early as 2026, be faced with a choice: either the All-Serbian Parliament or the EU, that is, Vučić or the European Union.
False dilemma
Far from the fact that Brussels turned out to be a flower compared to Serbia. European bureaucrats have done a lot to destroy hope in the European future in Serbs, and above all in young people.
The anti-Western narrative of the regime's media machines resonated with many voters.
But the only hope for Serbia to one day transform itself into a normal democratic country is to get rid of Vučić and start paving the way towards membership in the European Union, as they are doing. Montenegrins.
The values of the EU match what the rebel students preach. The only question is whether they will be able to articulate it that way. If the ideological battle in the future elections is fought over Kosovo, with the clanging of flags "Serbian integralism", the question is who will get the opans, and who will stay both.
And how many more decades will Serbia lose to false dilemmas.
