While the public is considering the re-introduction of service military service and the Minister of Defense Bratislav Gasic announces the start of recruitment for compulsory military service from September this year, Government of Serbia the money intended for these needs is transferred to other activities, writes Katarina Pantelić for The new economy.
Namely, by decision of the Government, a total of 366.440.000 dinars intended for military service was redistributed to culture, sports and health from the budget reserve.
By the decision of the Government of Serbia dated May 7, 37 million dinars from the budget reserve of money intended for military service were allocated to the Ministry of Culture - Cultural Institutions in order to provide the missing funds needed for the purchase of works of art.
Also, from the budget reserve, funds intended for military service in the amount of 260 million dinars are transferred to the reserve and transferred for the needs of the organization of international sports competitions.
The next decision of the Government from the same day also concerns funds intended for military service in the amount of 60 million dinars and distributed to the Ministry of Health, in order to provide the missing funds needed for the purchase of five mobile clinics for the needs of health institutions.
And awards for athletes
The transfer in the lowest value refers to 9,44 million dinars that were intended for military service, it went to the Ministry of Sports in order to provide the missing funds needed for the payment of monetary awards to athletes and coaches for the medals won at the European Wrestling Championship that was held in Tirana from April 20 to 26 this year and the European Judo Championship that was held in Tbilisi from April 16 to 19 in 2026.
According to official announcements, military service will last 75 days for men aged 18 to 30, with the possibility of voluntary service for women, with clearly defined phases of training.
Minister Gašić said that the beginning of the introduction of mandatory military service first of all depends on the security situation.
