Serbia ranks fifth in the world in the share of coal in electricity production

Benetton, Johnson Electric and Draxlmeier are the latest in a series of companies that have decided to close their plants in Serbia. How have these companies operated so far?
Since the beginning of this year, three companies operating in Serbia, Benetton, Johnson Electric and Drexlmeier announced the layoffs. The crisis in the automotive and other industries did not bypass Serbia either. Although they have been operating positively on the foreign market for years, some of the factories will have to be shut down.
The company Drexlmayer (Draxlmaier) Serbia is the last to announce that, after 15 years since its establishment in Serbia, to close your factory. The company's press release states that it is always dependent on matching orders from automakers. Thus, despite their efforts, they failed to secure orders for the plant in Zrenjanin, so after considering all options, they will be forced to close it during 2026.
As the company emphasized, they will offer employees a suitable social package.
How did Draxlmayer do business?
According to the data of the Agency for Economic Registers (APR), the company Drexlmayer had 2022 employees in 3.666.
This manufacturer of components for cars has been operating positively over the years, so the profit tax that year amounted to 53,85 million dinars, writes Katarina Pantelić in The new economy.
The company provided 4,27 million dinars for wages, salary allowances and other personal income.
In 2022, the income from the sale of goods was 10,7 billion dinars, and the income from sales on the domestic market was 74,8 million dinars, while on the foreign market they were 5,69 billion.
That year, Drexlmayer paid 27,39 million dinars in profit tax, while she paid 506,2 million dinars in taxes and contributions on wages and salary benefits.
In 2023, this company had an income tax of 27,4 million dinars, and Drexlmeier paid almost 4,3 billion dinars for salaries, wages and other personal expenses.
The company spent 4,29 billion dinars on wages, salary allowances and other personal expenses that year.
Benetton also announced layoffs
The company Benetton, which operates in Niš and is involved in the production of clothing, announced the closure of that production facility due to the business problems of the Benetton Group, as well as the termination of the employment contracts of employees based on technological redundancy. According to the data from the financial reports, it can be seen that in 2021 the company achieved business income of 3,07 billion dinars, as well as that the sales revenue on the domestic market amounted to 252.000 dinars, while those on the foreign market amounted to 2,9 billion.
The company's salary expenses in 2021 amounted to 180,1 million dinars.
Although the company was doing well, at the end of that year it had a loss of slightly more than 25 million dinars.
In the following year, 2022, business income amounted to 4,02 billion dinars.
If you look at Benetton's financial statements, the cost of wages and salary compensation that year amounted to 189,7 million dinars, while the cost of taxes and contributions on wages and salary compensation amounted to 30,7 million dinars.
In the following year, the income from Benetton's products and services totaled 3,9 billion dinars, all of which related to income on the foreign market, and the profit tax amounted to 998.000 dinars.
Benetton provided 233.4 million dinars for the costs of salaries and wages, while the costs of taxes and contributions on wages and wages amounted to 35,8 million dinars.
Johnson Electric had an income of 30 billion dinars
The third company that has announced layoffs since the beginning of this year, about 350 of them, is Johnson Electric. The company was founded in 2013 and produces electrical and electronic equipment for motor vehicles.
APR data show that in 2021 this company also operated with revenues of 21,11 billion dinars, while the profit tax cost it 29,25 million dinars.
The company spent 2,66 billion dinars on wages, benefits and other personal expenses.
The following year, in 2022, the company had an even higher income of 28,9 billion dinars, which was also the income generated on the foreign market. Johnson Electric's profit tax cost RSD 37,6 million.
This company spent 3,3 billion dinars on wages, salary allowances and other personal expenses.
In 2023, the company generated revenue of 30 billion dinars, while its expenditure in the same year was 1 billion.
"Vreme" previously wrote about the fact that Johnson Electric received subsidies from the state, but that a part of that money had to be returned.
Three years after it was registered in Niš, Johnson Electric signed a contract with the Ministry of Economy of Serbia, according to which it was supposed to receive a total of 19,2 million euros in incentives, more precisely to expand the production plant for the production of electric motors. However, at the end of last year, the company had to return about one million euros to the state.
At the meeting held with the workers and union representatives, it was decided that the workers themselves would apply to leave the company, and they were presented with "social programs" that could be implemented, as well as the amount of severance pay.
