American sanctions against NIS came into effect at six this morning. "Vremen" reporters made sure that there were no queues at the gas stations in the first hours and that payment by card was carried out normally.
As the "Vremena" reporters were able to see this morning, the state of gas stations is after entry into force of American sanctions against NIS on a regular basis. For the time being, no queues are being created for refueling.
At the NIS gas station in the center of Belgrade, they stated that the traffic was flowing smoothly and that they were working like every other day.
In addition to the absence of crowds, the card payment system still works smoothly.
NIS, after this morning's statement in which the introduction of sanctions was revealed and the address to the public by the retail director Bojana Radojević, the company issued a new statement in which it stated that there may still be problems with card payments at their pumps.
"The Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS) is currently operating under the sanctions of the United States of America, which is why there may be temporary problems with paying with Mastercard, Visa and American Express cards at gas stations," the announcement reads.
It is added that citizens can still buy fuel and products freely, and the company emphasizes that alternative payment methods are provided, including cash, domestic Dina cards, mobile banking through the "IPS Show" option, as well as payment through the "Drive.Go application".
Economics professor Goran Radosavljević said in a statement to AFP that as a result of the sanctions, "banks will have to immediately stop all transactions with NIS" in order to avoid fines for cooperation with the sanctioned entity.
Serbia also remains dependent on Russian gas, which covers more than 90 percent of its needs. The supply agreement signed in the spring of 2022 with Moscow will soon expire, and a new agreement is currently being negotiated, the AFP agency concluded.
