Virus African plague pig empty barns all over Srem. The infection has now been confirmed on one of the largest farms in the region, in Hrtkovci, which has as many as 10.000 pigs. The plan is to euthanize the infected pigs.
Serbian Minister of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry Dragan Glamočić says that there is no vaccination against the virus in Europe.
"Unfortunately, euthanasia is part of the job. The virus is registered in more than 70 countries of the world, including 16 from Europe - it's also in our neighborhood, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Romania... It lurks from all sides, and in our country the most in the Srem and Mačvan districts, where there are the most pigs," says Glamočić.
He points out that the largest number of pigs will be executed during the day and tomorrow.
"The virus must be removed as soon as possible. The state will compensate the owner of the farm, but now he will not be able to keep new pigs again for six months to a year. Just one moment of inattention and the virus enters the farm," says the Minister of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry.
He appeals to local authorities to take care of hygiene.
"Care must be taken, the virus has been among us for nine years. The only way we can suppress it is through discipline. I would like to point out that the virus cannot be transferred to people, neither through meat, nor in any other way," says Glamočić.
