The door of one of the side entrances Novi Sad The cathedral was set on fire early Thursday morning. On occasion fire there were no injuries, and firefighters prevented major material damage to the church building.
According to the Novi Sad media, traces of burning can be seen on the door and the staircase of the entrance, and the smell of garbage can be felt in the surroundings of the church.
Together with the firefighters, there are police units on the scene who are investigating. The cause of the fire is still unknown, writes Razglas.news.
It is suspected that the fire was arson
The priest of the Church of the Name of Mary (better known as the Novi Sad Cathedral), Atila Želer, said that he suspected that the fire was set, but that he was not sure for what reason.
"At six o'clock, when I got out of bed, I saw firemen and police vehicles standing next to the church. When I came out, they said that, I suppose, there had been an arson attack," Zeller told the portal.
The priest states that since he has been serving in the church since 2021, there have never been any similar incidents.
The police secured the area around the church, and it was announced that the entrance to the church would be repaired.
