There were 1.653.330 pensioners on the April payroll of the Republic Pension and Disability Insurance Fund (PIO Fund). That is about 2.000 more than in December 2023.
Looking at the type of pension, the majority were old-age pensioners – 1.095.757. Old-age pensioners make up 66,3 percent of the total number. Looking at the municipalities, the most pensions are paid in New Belgrade - 57.541, and the least in the municipality of Crna Trava, only 394.
These latest data are completely opposite to the data of the Republic PIO Fund from January last year, according to which the number of pensioners is decreasing from year to year. At that time, it was said that from December 2015 until October 2022, the number of pensioners was reduced from 1.735.942 to 1.646.903. Therefore, in a period of seven years, the number of pension beneficiaries decreased by almost 90.000.
At the same time, the Republic Statistical Office (RZS) announced that last year, in 2023, 61.052 children were born, and 97.081 people died. This means that the natural increase was negative - it amounted to minus 36.029 inhabitants.
In the period from 2014 to 2023, the number of inhabitants in the Republic of Serbia decreased by 434.606 and that only on the basis of natural increase.
The rate of natural increase in our country is -5,4 per thousand. This means that the negative value is reduced by 1,6 per thousand compared to the value from 2022.
The rate of natural increase in 2023 was positive only in eight municipalities. These are: Tutin, Novi Pazar, Sjenica, Preševo, Kostolac, Zvezdara, Bujanovac and Novi Sad. The lowest negative rate of natural increase was recorded in the Belgrade region.
