Poverty in Serbia more and more often it leads people to what is unavailable to them in stores they "acquire" by stealing it, only if they get the chance.
What it looks like from the perspective of those who work in such conditions for "Vreme" is explained by a saleswoman of one of the large retail chains in Serbia, specializing in the trade of textiles and household items, who insisted on remaining anonymous in order to avoid possible inconvenience to the employer.
She says that there are no rules when it comes to the goods that are stolen, and that the "target" is the entire wardrobe, socks, underwear, baby clothes, adult clothes, and there are no rules when it comes to price either, so everything is stolen from the cheapest to the most expensive.
"Everybody steals, young people and pensioners alike, there are no rules. Sometimes they come in groups, but most often they steal alone. Our store is always crowded, there are many people, so they take advantage of the situation so that none of the workers can see them," says the saleswoman.
Various theft techniques
She states that thieves are very resourceful and that there are different techniques of theft.
"They remove the labels from the items, throw them on the floor, so that they don't whistle at the exit gate. They put the stolen items in their pockets, in the bags and bags they carry with them. They enter the changing rooms, remove the labels and 'buzzers', put on their clothes and then leave the store," says the saleswoman.
She emphasizes that there are no rules when it comes to the days or parts of the day when the most theft occurs, but that every part of the day is equally critical, and that there are always those who are ready to steal.
"Weekends are the busiest, that's when we notice the most thefts. We don't have security in the store, we try to monitor the situation ourselves, and so far we haven't called the police," says the saleswoman.
Behind the thief is only the door.
She explains that if she notices someone suspicious, she should politely ask them to show me what they have with them, in the presence of a colleague.
"If I notice someone and he starts to run away, I can only go to the front door to try to stop him. The employer has the attitude that the safety of the workers comes first and that you should avoid arguing and arguing with the customer," she says.
He adds that all goods in the store are insured up to a certain amount at the company level.
"The deficit in the store is assessed at the half-yearly inventory, and depending on how much it is, the directorate decides on compensation for the deficit," concludes the saleswoman.
