The majority of educators in primary schools will return to work this Monday, March 31 - after 11 weeks strike.
The teachers stood up in January 2025, after they unions in education agreed with the state on new salaries, which were still not at the level promised by the state in 2023. They also stood up for their own rights, but also stood behind the students' demands. Some of them are now outraged by the lack of support from colleagues from other public sectors.
"Dear patters on the back, now you! We will join when needed!", writes one of the educational workers on X, and in the signature of this message she put - Education of Serbia.
Many have waited for the teachers' decision to start working again, arguing that they are not persistent enough and that they gave up on the strike when their wages were reduced or canceled. February salaries.
However, almost no one from the public sector joined the educators in the strike, except for a few faculties in Belgrade, such as Physics, Electrical Engineering and Medicine, although for weeks they also invited workers from EPS, the Post Office, various levels of government in local self-governments, as well as faculty professors.
The new president of the Forum of Belgrade High Schools, Ana Dimitrijević, said in an interview for "Vreme" on the day of the payment of the February salary, which many teachers did not receive:Don't pity the teachers, join them in the strike".
Dušan Bojanić, a teacher from Zrenjanin who walked across Serbia, told "Vreme" that he would most "I would like other educators to stop their work so that we can share this pressure that the striking teachers have been facing in recent months".
Although some faculties in Serbia told "Vreme" that they have a problem voting for a strike because the non-teaching staff would not agree to it, only three faculties joined the strike. However, The Ministry of Education left without salary and all employees in higher education at the end of March.
The same recipe that broke the backbone of the primary and secondary school strike began to be applied.
What is the situation in the classrooms?
Educators from Čačak and Lucan returned to their classrooms, although as part of a legal strike. The majority of schools in Užice, as well as some elementary schools in Belgrade, decided to end the suspension of work. Educators from Užice, Čačak and Lucan state that they are returning to classes guided by the interest of the students, and that they will express their support for the student protests in another way and thus continue their struggle.
Aleksandar Vinić from the United Education of Serbia he told "Vreme" that the state tried to crush the teachers by reducing or canceling wages.
Across Serbia, a certain number of teachers are not working, and the number ranges from a few of them to half or the entire collective. In high schools where classes are held, many high school graduates or students from other grades still refuse to come to classes. The exact number of schools and teachers suspended is still difficult to determine.
As far as Belgrade is concerned, according to information from the Forum of Belgrade Grammar Schools, the majority of grammar schools are still suspended.
