The State Department officially notified the United States Congress on Friday (March 28) that it is dissolving Agency for International Development (USAID) and that some of the functions will USAID taken under its control, reports CNN, and FoNet reports.
USAID Reorganization will be done by July 1, the State Department announced, thus determining the fate of the agency that fought poverty and hunger around the world.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio pointed out that the right foreign aid can advance US national interests, protect borders and strengthen partnerships with key allies, but USAID "unfortunately has long since strayed from its original mission", it was announced on the website of the State Department.
"As a result, the gains were too few and the costs too high. Thanks to President Trump, that misguided and fiscally irresponsible era is now over," Rubio stressed.
He announced that foreign aid programs would be reoriented to align directly with what is best for the United States and its citizens.
"We continue with essential life-saving programs and strategic investments that strengthen our partners and our own country. This is another promise made and delivered to the American people," Rubio said.
Donald Trump's administration has accused USAID of mismanaging taxpayer money and funding foreign programs that are not in the interest of the United States.
Current and former USAID employees and aid experts argue that the agency, while flawed, meets vital humanitarian needs and fosters "American soft power."
What did USAID finance in Serbia?
USAID's financing takes place both through projects and various grants, as well as through direct donations. About part of the money for various projects in a certain time that Serbia and NGOs received from USAID "Vreme" previously wrote.
Because USAID does not offer a unified list of all organizations that are financed through its grants. On their website, it is possible to find certain projects that are currently active, but which, due to the interruption of funding, are temporarily suspended.
For example, in 2023, the state of Serbia received over 33 million dollars from the United States of America through the USAID project.
