The Government of the Republic of Serbia made a decision on the termination of the status of cultural property of the buildings of the General Staff of the Army of Serbia and Montenegro and the Ministry of Defense in Belgrade - it was announced in the "Official Gazette" of November 14.
"The buildings of the General Staff of the Army of Serbia and Montenegro and the Ministry of Defense in Belgrade, which are located at 33-44 Kneza Miloša Street, and which are state property, cease to be cultural assets and are deleted from the register of immovable cultural assets," the decision reads. government.
The decision enters into force on the eighth day after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia, which means that the demolition of the General Staff can begin on November 22.
Tramp
On the site of this until yesterday cultural complex, the construction of a luxury hotel according to the company's project is planned Jared Kushner, son-in-law of Donald Trump. Shortly thereafter, it was reported that the US Senate Finance Committee had launched an investigation into Kushner.
Donald Trump was declared president of the USA on November 6. The President of Serbia was among the first to congratulate him.
The government's decision to demolish the General Staff means complete disrespect for the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Europa Nostra organization, the profession and the public.
This May, the Serbian government signed a contract with Jared Kushner's company for the construction of a luxury hotel on the site of the former General Staff complex in Belgrade, under the radar of the public and without explanation.
Profession
Having refused to remove the protection from the General Staff, Olivera Vučković and Dubravka Đukanović, directors of the Belgrade and Serbian Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, submitted their resignations. They were replaced by other people, who wanted to do what was asked of them.
Serbian Academy of Sciences and Artsand announced that it is expressly opposed to the demolition.
The architects issued a Declaration on the fate of the Fair and the General Staff, which has been supported by 50 institutions and associations from Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, ICOMOS, DOCOMOMO International - an international organization for the documentation and conservation of buildings, places and entities, in the form of open letters. of the modern movement in architecture, and the International Union of Architects.
The petition against the demolition of the General Staff was signed by more than 24 people in just 10.000 hours.
Evropa Nostra Serbia ran for the General Staff complex for this year's program "7 Most Endangered" objects and entities in Europe.
And, it was worth nothing.
One of the authors of the Declaration, Dr. Borislav Stojkov, told "Vreme": "They are confident in their power to remove protection if it is necessary and profitable for them, or if they have some other interest." Likewise, if the laws say otherwise, they will change the laws, or if the urban plans show other verified planning solutions, they will change the plans, all according to the wishes and instructions of the investor. Protection services, whether at the republic or city level, have long been under the strong influence of the political will of the authorities. Today, we are in a situation where everything depends on the government's pressure on the institutions of protection and urban planning, which, in my opinion, is also illegal and immoral".
Seselj
Obviously, the position that was announced by the head of the Radical Party, Vojislav Šešelj, in the last episode two days ago on the "Hit Tweet" TV Pink show:
"Now smart people have appeared, some from the academy (SANU), even to preserve it as a monument of culture, of what kind of culture?" A certain architect Dobrović, known for the construction of those communist buildings, built the General Staff here to resemble the Sutjeska canyon where the partisans allegedly broke through, and where Tito sacrificed the wounded to save his head. Is it some cultural value? And if Trump's son-in-law is ready to invest a billion dollars and build an elite hotel there, why not give it? A clear gain for Serbia, plus the problems in the city center would be solved."
