Who was lucky enough to wake up in Belgrade, he can check the exact time on the newly installed expensive watch on Republic Square – the new symbol of the city, as announced by the mayor Aleksandar Šapić.
The clock, nine meters high without a stand and weighing seven and a half tons, was installed, as announced, in the middle of the new roundabout in the central city square on the night between February 21 and 22. Approaching the hour on foot is not possible.
The base of the watch is steel, and the outer casing is made of cast material.
As Šapić said, it is about handwork made in Serbia with a guarantee of one hundred years.
"I believe that it will become a new symbol of this part of the city and that we will all be able to be proud of it," said Šapić.
Multi-million instead of the Millennium Clock
The city allocated 12 million dinars including VAT for its construction and installation, Nova ekonomija announced last summer.
Republic Square already had a similar symbol. The Millennium Clock stood in the pedestrian zone from 2000 to 2019. It was removed during the reconstruction of the Square.
