Today's protest was called by the Fortress Movement. Citizens started to gather in Despota Đurđa, not far from the French cap, between the central city promenade of Kralja Peter and the Danube quay, shortly before 18 p.m.
The movement stated that it has been warning for years that through the center Smedereva "every day tankers with liquefied petroleum gas pass along a railway that does not have a construction or use permit, is not registered in the cadastre and passes only a few meters from residential buildings, children's playgrounds and promenades".
The organizers had previously announced that they would carry out an action to remove the illegal railroad, the use of which, as they stated, "endangers the lives of the residents of this place."
Two people detained
The incident occurred when the leader of the "Fortress" movement, Nikola Krstić, announced that he would use his tools to symbolically dismantle the illegal railroad. On that occasion, two activists of that movement were detained.
The organizers invited the citizens to go to the police station and demand the release of the two detainees.
In the park near the French Cap, next to the mentioned railroad, there is a police cordon all day in equipment to break up demonstrations.
Professor of the Faculty of Law Miodrag Jovanović said at the meeting that no one has the intention to acquire a right that does not belong to him, but to perform a duty that was not performed by the state authorities of this country, he said.
"We are gathered here tonight because our friends have decided to take matters into their own hands," he said.
Jovanović reminded that the Fortress Movement addressed the competent inspection and gave them 30 days to do what it was supposed to do, which they did not do.
"When the authorities do not fulfill their legal obligations, it is up to the citizens to react," said Jovanović.
