Protection Commissioner equality Milan Antonijević warned that discrimination based on age is prohibited by the Law of discrimination expressly prohibited.
He pointed out that senior fellow citizens have the same right to dignity, respect and free expression of their political beliefs as all other citizens.
"Public space must be a place for reasoned and responsible discussion, and not a space in which an entire social group is stigmatized, insulted or presented as the culprit for social and political circumstances," said Antonijević regarding the frequent negative comments, offensive and discriminatory messages on the networks, as well as media content that followed the publication of research on voter preferences of pensioners.
"Generalizations, disparagement and messages that encourage intolerance towards older citizens represent an unacceptable narrative that deepens social divisions and can contribute to the creation of a hostile and humiliating environment for this group of citizens," Antonijevic said in a warning.
He reminded that the right to freedom of expression does not include the right to speech that insults, discriminates or incites hatred towards any social group.
Antonijević emphasized that the media and all participants in the public space have a special responsibility not to contribute to the spread of stereotypes, prejudices and intolerance with their reporting and public appearances.
