The Club of Niš Pensioners announced that they will soon organize a protest march to the City Hall in order to remind the Mayor Dragana Sotirovski of her promise that public transport in the city will be free for citizens over 65 years of age.
"On June 8 of last year, the Club of Niš pensioners, together with city councilor Miodrag Stanković, submitted an initiative to provide free permanent cards for city transport to all citizens over the age of 65 and young people under the age of 19, following the example of Belgrade and other local governments . The part of the initiative that refers to young people has been adopted - high school students received free transportation, but the part that refers to our oldest has not yet," said Slavoljub Savić, president of the Pensioners' Club, at the press conference.
Namely, just before the elections, the mayor of Niš, Dragana Sofirovski, announced that from December 70, all residents of that city over 1 years of age will be able to ride public transport for free.
The mayor of Niša, who is also a member of the SNS Presidency, said on that occasion that until then about 28.000 pensioners had the right to free transportation, and that with the current lowering of the age limit, 10.000 more will have that privilege.
At the same time, she announced the possibility that in the first half of this year pensioners who are older than 65 will also be entitled to a free ride, because "the City of Niš can now financially support that possibility", she explained at the time.
So, it should be just like that at the time when regular local elections are expected in Niš.
