Milk producers and farmers, who used 100 tractors to block the Ibar highway in Mrčajevci near Čačak, were joined today (February 12) by vegetable growers from Zablaće. Vegetable producers brought several dozen tractors to the protest site.
Farmers say that if anyone in charge had addressed them, another point would not have been blocked, a very busy road in the village of Vitanovci that leads from Kraljevo to Vrnjačka banja.
Goran Joksimović from the village of Gledić in Raš says that this is not only about dairy farmers, but about the entire state of animal husbandry, reports N1.
"From the breeders of pigs, sheep, lambs, us dairy farmers - it's catastrophic, carambola lives on the market. Milk costs from 25 to 50 dinars, and the Ministry knows very well that a liter of milk costs us producers 82 dinars. We all work in the red every day," he said.
Farmers in Bogatić also took their tractors to the streets.
Farmers demand that the market for all their products be regulated and excessive imports be regulated, so that they can survive and make money.
The students in the blockade also supported the milk producers who already the second day they protest on the Ibar highway near Mrcajevac. They invite all farmers and citizens to join to the dairymen and support them with their presence.
Night in the blockade
Milk producers and farmers spent the night in tractor cabins with which they blocked the Ibar highway in Mrčajevci.
They say that the night passed peacefully, that there have been no incidents since the beginning of the blockade, and that the police are securing the blockade and redirecting traffic so that there are no traffic jams on the part of the highway that they blocked.
Demand that the state react urgently
They were joined by students from Čačak who came in a convoy to the blockade in Mrčajevci last night around 10:00 PM and spent the night with dairy farmers and farmers.
Dairy farmers and farmers demand from the Government of Serbia the protection of the domestic milk and meat market, the introduction of levies and import quotas, control of the quality and origin of milk and dairy products at the border, the return of purchase prices to the previous level, as well as guaranteed purchase from each producer.
They warn that without an urgent response from the state, many households will not survive and that the crisis in the dairy sector is not measured in days or weeks.
The blockade of the Ibarska highway in Mrčajevci was organized by the Čača agricultural association "Šajkača" and the Šumadija and Pomoravlje Milk Producers' Association from Kraljevac.
