The city authorities ignored the opinion Belgrader and experts, so on April 3, dismantling began Old Sava bridge, in order to free up space for a new, more modern one.
What about the Old Bridge?
The last information about the further fate of Stari Mosta was from November last year, when the start of dismantling was announced, so thanks to the activists from "The Bridge Remains" who guarded it day and night, it lived until recently. At that time, Mayor Šapić said that he did not know what would happen to the bridge, and the media later found out that it will be taken apart and stored somewhere until it is decided what to do with it.
It is being considered that he will be transferred somewhere in Belgrade or in Serbia. In Belgrade, it could replace the temporary pontoon crossing on Lida, which would enable a permanent pedestrian crossing, or connect New Belgrade with Ada. And there is a possibility to choose something else. A favorable place for him in Serbia has not yet been found, such a move would also entail other infrastructure works.
More is known about the new bridge, primarily how it will look, but also that it will not perform its full function. Namely, the demolition of the Old Sava Bridge is connected with the tunnel that will connect the new Sava Bridge with Despot Stefan Boulevard and the Panceva Bridge.
Where is the tunnel?
Without that tunnel, the bridge will only connect the two banks.
The people of Belgrade assume that the same will happen with the new bridge as with the Bridge on Ada, which does not lead to the eastern part of the city because the tunnel was not built, although it was planned. Admittedly, in 2023, the City of Belgrade began collecting the necessary documentation for the construction of an underground road under Topčiderski brdo, the start of which depends on the money provided.
Let's remind you that at the beginning of January, the state took a loan of 24,9 billion dinars (about 213 million euros) from Poštanska Štedionica for the tunnel project connecting Despota Stefana Boulevard and the area near the Faculty of Economics. Citizens will repay this loan over the next 10 years, and the project itself involves the removal of the Old Sava Bridge and the construction of a new bridge in the same place. Apart from this loan, on December 26, 970 million dinars were taken from the budget reserve for this project, which are missing for the "construction of the tunnel connection from Karađorđeva Street to the Danube slope".

The mayor of Belgrade, Aleksandar Šapić, said that the tunnel construction project is called a "small metro", because it will enable Despota Stefana Boulevard to be connected to New Belgrade via the new Sava bridge and that with its help it can be reached "faster than by metro".
He also noted that it will be necessary for several months to "move certain infrastructure related to the electrical network and sewerage in order to create the conditions for the start of tunnel drilling."
For the New Year, he said that he expects that, if everything goes according to plan, the tunnel will be put into operation in 2027 along with the access roads that are being worked on on one and the other side of the bridge.
