Minister of Interior Affairs Ivica Dacic announced on Saturday that 12 open fires are currently active and added that there are suspicions that some of them are fires planted.
According to him, from August 5 until today, about 1400 fires were active in the open air, and that four locations are problematic, the most problematic of which is the Deliblatska peščara, because the terrain is extremely inaccessible.
As he told Prva television, 300 members of different sectors, 72 vehicles, 37 work machines and one fire engine were engaged in extinguishing the fire in Deliblatska Peščara, but he added that all settlements are safe and that the locals are helping to extinguish the fire.
He said that there are suspicions that some of the fires were set, but that the prosecutor's office, if proceedings are initiated, qualifies such an act as negligence.
"The problem is in the qualification of those acts, and when you have very well-founded suspicions, it qualifies as negligence, as a misdemeanor, that's not done by the emergency sector, that's done by other state bodies, other services. The MUP reports someone, but you go to the prosecutors and they say there's no criminal act, it's negligence," Dačić said.
