General Manager Center for Local Self-Government (CLS) Nikola Jovanović estimated that instead of the announced budget of 14 billion euros being spent on unnecessary facilities EXPO 2027 - that investment cycle should have been used to complete the water supply and sewerage network in Belgrade, as well as to build a factory for the treatment of all waste water.
"Belgrade is the only capital city in Europe where feces, oil and industrial waste water are poured into rivers without treatment, and half a million Belgraders are not even connected to the sewage network," Jovanović pointed out.
He considers it a "serious and civilizational mistake" to plan to hold EXPO 2027, and that "that undertaking does not include the effort to ensure that all Belgraders are connected to sewerage, water supply and district heating, as well as to finally clean up the Danube and Sava".
"The purification of waste water, which currently goes directly into the Sava and Danube at 104 locations in Belgrade, would mean the creation of conditions for a true descent to the rivers, the development of nautical tourism and river traffic, as well as a higher quality of life and a higher value of all real estate in the capital," said Jovanović.
