Rebel university in Belgrade, the Free University of Nis and the Free University of Kragujevac, in three university centers, are organizing the event "We defend with knowledge" whose goal is to present universities as an inseparable part of society and important actors when considering the main social problems.
In Belgrade, the rally started on Studentski trg, in front of the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade. There, numerous faculties set up their stands where important social topics will be discussed, among others, the "Jadar" project, the EXPO exhibition, as well as the election of the REM Council.
The rally in Belgrade lasts until 21 p.m.
Underestimation of knowledge
Professor Bojana Obradović of the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy told N1 that for years there has been a strong propaganda of underestimating knowledge, expertise, culture and art.
She recalled the regulation of the Government of Serbia on the calculation of salaries at universities, which she points out is illegal and does not respect the work of professors in science.
"It defines that we work one hour a day in science, which is 10 percent of our working time, which represents a negligible part of our work, and it is according to scientific results that universities are ranked," said Obradović.
She also explained that today's event was designed by Professor Vladimir Đurđević from the Faculty of Physics, and the goal, as she said, is to show citizens that universities are an inseparable part of society, that they deal with social problems, have their own opinion on them, and offer solutions and a view into the future.
"At our stands, we show the problems we are working on, we will show some of the most attractive scientific results that look to the future, and we also have a rich artistic program. The artists also show their overview of the whole situation," Obradović said.
Exspo
What will the Expo bring to Serbia? An investment boom or a corruption scandal, after which the state coffers will be empty by several billion euros?
"We are talking about how there is no money for culture, no money for education, no money for environmental protection, and we will build some kind of spectacular fairgrounds in the fields of Surčin for who knows what motives. And with the absolute recognition of the state that it is not capable of completing any capital project according to its own laws," said Dejan Pavlović, associate professor of the Faculty of Political Sciences.
Rio Tinto
The scientific community deals with Rio Tinto and highlights mainly the negative aspects of this project.
"The government has all possible resources to market all possible information, and the academic community is quite limited in that sense. However, we organized ourselves, understanding it as our academic obligation to get to know the population. We organized on our own initiative and tried in several columns to show the population of Serbia facts that would be relevant", says Predrag Simonović, full professor at the Faculty of Biology.
Students invited to the event
Previously, Students in Blockade on their Instagram account shared an invitation to citizens to participate in the rally that is being held on Saturday, May 10.
"Teachers, scientists and students have designed numerous scientific and artistic contents in order to share with you at least a part of the knowledge, skills and creativity that are nurtured at the University of Belgrade and the University of Arts in Belgrade," the students said.
They explained that the idea of the exhibition is "to present universities, which as an inseparable part of society have an important role in considering the main social issues and problems, and to contribute to their opening to the general public and citizens."
"In the defense of knowledge, we defend knowledge", said the students.
