Belgrade Archbishop Ladislav Nemet becomes a cardinal

Belgrade Archbishop Ladislav Nemet is one of the 21 future cardinals, Pope Francis announced. He will thus become the first cardinal in the history of the Catholic Church in Serbia

Pope Francis announced that on December 8, he will appoint 21 new cardinals, including the one from Belgrade Archbishop Ladislav Nemet.

On Sunday, the Pope published a list of future cardinals on the Vatican website, and Nemeth is eighth on the list.

The list includes future cardinals from Peru, Argentina, Ecuador, Chile, Japan, Philippines, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Canada and Serbia.

According to the website of the Belgrade Archdiocese, Nemet will be the first cardinal in the history of the Catholic Church in Serbia.

Nemet was born in 1956 in Odzaci, Serbia. In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of the Diocese of Zrenjanin, and in 2022, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Belgrade.

He speaks Hungarian, Serbian, English, German, Polish, Italian and Croatian.
