The last bus from the old station in Karađorđeva Street in Belgrade left 50 minutes after midnight. Soon, the lights in the waiting rooms were turned off and a padlock was put on this facility that had been in operation for 58 years
Half an hour before the departure of the last bus, the ramp at the station, which was always lowered, was now raised, and there was no guard. The public toilets were working, as was one ticket counter. At the entrance to the platform area, the door was open and security did not ask for tokens or platform tickets for entry.
There were about fifty people at the stop, passengers and members of the press crew, who were waiting for the last departure.
Before the last bus of the carrier "Kani-Bus", which went from Niš to Ljubljana, two Niš-express buses also said goodbye to the old Belgrade bus station. One of them, for some reason, left the platform only a few minutes before the last one.
It was raining persistently, and passengers and drenched journalists waited patiently for the "main star of the evening", the bus that appeared thirty minutes before the scheduled departure.
Passengers generally knew that this was the last departure, and that this facility would be closed after their boarding. However, until the handover of this complex to the new owner - "Belgrade on the water", there will be members of the security service in the station premises.
Let's remind, instead of the station, "Belgrade on the water" is preparing the construction of the residential building "BW Diva". In that place, according to the location conditions issued by the Secretariat for Urbanism and Construction Affairs, the construction of a residential-business complex with a total gross area of almost 100.000 square meters, of which 69.500 will be above ground, is planned.
Nenad, one of the passengers to Ljubljana, tells Vreme that he regrets that this station is closing, because "he has been departing from it all his life."
"This place suits me better, and New Belgrade less so, because from Karaburma I have to cross twice as far as I have traveled so far." I don't know how it will work," says Nenad.
He adds that the main problem after the location change will be the passengers from the interior, who do not know how to get to the station in Block 42.
"Honestly, I think that even many citizens of Belgrade still have no idea where the new station is." Especially since it is not finished, and people are poorly informed. And for those from the interior, it will be chaos to find their way. It will take them a long time. It will be 'cheerful' for them", says Nenad.
The journalists present were most interested in the driver of the last bus and what he thought about moving the station to a new location.
Drago Došen is a driver from Slovenia and says that he has been doing this job for his entire working life, already 40 years.
"I can tell you that the feeling is very strange." We knew this part of Belgrade well, and now we are moving to a new location. It will be difficult for us drivers, the center was close to us, and now it will be different, but you get used to everything," said Došen and added that this last drive to Ljubljana should last eight hours, if there are no problems at the borders.
At exactly 00.50:XNUMX, Drago Došen got behind the wheel and the last bus left Belgrade for Ljubljana. Before the departure, BAS representatives gave the drivers a symbolic gift - a wooden statue.
After the bus left, members of the security service called the journalists and turned off the light in the waiting room in front of them, and locked the facility. With that, the bus station in Karađorđeva street officially stopped working.
At the end, one of the security guards jokingly said: "Come on, fayront, there's nothing left here."

The history of the station is 58 years long
By the way, the Belgrade bus station in Karađorđeva Street was put into operation on March 3, 1966 and belonged to a group of large companies, with the status of a joint stock company.
According to BAS data, the station initially had 65 active platforms from which buses departed. At the time of closing, on September 29, 2024, there were 39 platforms.
During the SFRY, in addition to all major cities in Serbia, with a network of bus lines, BAS covered all the republics of the former country and regularly maintained bus connections with 17 European countries, including Germany, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy , Hungary, Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden...
Every day, around 700 buses transported more than 10.000 passengers.

The old station on Tasmajdan
It is interesting that before the construction of the station in Karađorđeva Street, in the period after the Second World War, buses departed from the station located on the plateau in front of the St. Mark's Church on Tašmajdan.
As stated on the "Kaldrma" portal, it did not have platforms, but it did have a station building. It was an ordinary one-story house with a slightly sloping roof and without any decoration. She was beautifying this part of the city, and travelers were pressing in front of her.
It was like that until 1966, when the Belgrade bus station was built in Karađorđeva Street on Savski Venec.

Šapić's fiasco at the opening of the new station
Now that station has also gone down in history, and it remains to be seen how the traffic from the station in New Belgrade will proceed.
Namely, in addition to the fact that everyone from the republican government boycotted the opening ceremony, there was no state secretary or assistant minister from any ministry, especially Vesić's, even though it is departmental.
Šapić hoped that, as announced, the Prime Minister and President of SNS, Miloš Vučević, would come, but on Thursday evening, the media received a notification from the Prime Minister's Office that attendance at the event was cancelled.
Despite all that, the new station is not even finished. It was put into operation even though it does not have a station building, and even though, according to the claims of BAS director Boban Kovačević, it received a use permit, there is not a single trash can on all 65 platforms.
According to the claims of the city authorities, the station building will be completed by the end of the year, while the end of all works on the new station is expected only in 2027.
We remind you that the value of the works has doubled since the start of construction, from 25 to even 50 million euros.
The delay in works and the breaking of deadlines on this facility is measured in years, considering that Siniša Mali, when he was the mayor, promised to open in 2016 or 2017.
